HYDERABAD: Three months after changing the party’s name from TRS to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) officially, BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao appointed Himanshu Tiwari party national general secretary on Wednesday.
This is the first national-level appointment of the party after its formation. BRS president KCR also appointed six coordinators for Maharashtra state.
The 31-year-old, hailing from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, holds a post-graduate degree in IT, and has been actively involved in the farmers' movement against three new farm laws in Delhi two years ago.
He was part of the United Kisan Morcha during 2020-2021, and a member of the national executive of SKM.
Though he officially joined the BRS on the first day of launching BRS on October 5, 2022 at Telangana Bhavan, he has been doing work for the BRS and coordinating with the party leadership especially BRS president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao since August 2022.
“I first met KCR during an interaction with Kisan leaders in Delhi along with Rakesh Tikait and others. I liked his vision for the country, love towards farming community and fighting spirit,” Himanshu Tiwari told TOI on Wednesday.
He has been given the task of expanding the party in various states, especially in northern parts of the country.
“Right now, we are focussing on Maharashtra and Odisha. In the next phase, other states such as UP, Haryana and other states would be taken up,” the newly appointed secretary said.
His selection for the national general post surprised many as this was the first appointment as KCR has been acting as national president. Earlier Gurnam Singh was appointed BRS national Kisan Morcha president and Thota Chandrasekhar was made president of the AP BRS wing.
Sources in the BRS said though he was young and did not have rich experience in politics, barely eight years in the socio-political field, KCR chose him for the post as he can travel to various states and coordinate with the leaders.
They said Himanshu launched a 21-day padaytra from Champaran in Bihar to Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and mobilised thousands of people in Jan Jagran padayatra. Presently he is part of team KCR (Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao). As BRS National general secretary, he will actively participate in the organisational works of BRS.
Meanwhile, KCR appointed six coordinators for Maharashtra state. They include Dasarath Sawanth (Nashik division), Balasaheb Jairam Deshmukh (Pune division), Vijay Tanaji Mohite (Mumbai division), Somnath Thorat (Aurangabad division), Dyanesh Wakudkar (Nagpur division) and Nikhil Deshmukh (Amaravathi division).
