HYDERABAD: A housewife allegedly slit the throats of her two children before attempting suicide at their house in Jagadgirigutta on Tuesday. Her nine-month-old daughter succumbed, while the woman and her elder daughter survived the suicide bid.
Four years ago, Kalavati, 28, got married to
Krishna Reddy from Papi Reddy Nagar in Jagadgirigutta. Reddy has been working with a private firm located at IDA Balanagar.
The couple had two daughters, Maheswari, 3, and nine-month-old Devipriya.
According to Jeedimetla police, the couple had been frequently quarrelling over certain issues since the past few days.
On Monday night, they had an altercation when Reddy found fault with Kalavati attending her sister's marriage despite his objections.
Kalavati resorted to the extreme step after Reddy left for work on Tuesday morning. "At about 10.30 am, she slit the throats of both the girls using a shaving blade and later attempted to slit her own throat. Neighbours, who heard the screams of the girls, found them bleeding with injuries and alerted us," Jeedimetla inspector A Sanjeeva Rao said.
The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where Devipriya was declared brought dead.
Maheswari and Kalavati are undergoing treatment and their condition is said to be critical.
Police booked cases against Kalavati under sections 302 (Murder), 307 (Attempt to murder) and 309 (Attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
