Over 6,208 Telangana post offices gear up to open over 30,000 Sukanya accounts

HYDERABAD: Telangana Postal Circle has geared up to organise ‘Sukanya Maha melas’ in 6,208 post offices in the state to open 30,000-plus Sukanya accounts on February 9 and 10.
A girl child aged below 10 years is eligible for the ‘Sukanya Samriddhi Account’ (SSA) with a minimum deposit of Rs 250 and the present rate of interest on the scheme is 7.6%.
“As part of the ‘All India Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav-AMRITPEX Plus-2023,’ all 6,208 post offices in Telangana state will organize ‘Sukanya Maha’ melas, in 33 districts, with an aim of opening 30,000-plus ‘Sukanya Accounts,” director, Postal Services Headquarters, K Devaraj, stated in an official release issued on Wednesday .
He also said that about 17,095 staffers have been motivated and trained to help parents to understand the benefits of the scheme. The postmen, ‘Gramina Dak Sevaks’ (GDS) and other staff have undertaken door-to-door campaigns, distributed pamphlets, and held rallies and created wide spread awareness about benefits of Sukanya.
The postal department official also said that a total of 8,62,776 Sukanya Samriddhi accounts opened between January- 2015 and January – 2023 in Telangana and another 89,996 Sukanya accounts during the 2022-2023 fiscal year (up to January) were opened.
The parents of 18.81 lakhs Girl Children in 0 to 6 years age group are appealed to take advantage of the special drive and open Sukanya Accounts. Parents can also avail the facility by raising a service request through ‘PostInfo’ android mobile application, said the director of postal services.
