WARANGAL: The police-sponsored ‘Parivarthana Sadassu’ (counselling camp), conducted to transform rowdy-sheeters into peace-loving citizens, triggered a controversy in Warangal on Monday.
Karuna, the wife of a suspended police sub-inspector Ravi Kumar, alleged that her husband was never a rowdy and had been fixed by his opponents due to professional jealousy.
He was beaten up in custody unncessarily, she added at a press meet organised by the Mahajana Sangharshana Samithi (MSS) leader Manda Krishna Madiga.
MSS leader Krishna Madiga said the sadassu was attended by about 152 accused from the city on Sunday. District police superintendent Nalin Prabhat announced that 24 names had been struck off the list of accused.
While the ‘Parivarthana Sadassu’ concluded on Sunday evening after the 24 were released from the camp, the suspended SI was held captive by the police in Matwada station of the town. He alleged that the suspended SI was intentionally subjected to harassment from Saturday night itself. He was caned in the lockup, Krishna Madiga alleged.
The MSS leader demanded that the superintendent of police order a special inquiry into the alleged corrupt practices of Ravi Kumar’s opponents in the department. He said MSS would provide full evidence of the corruption of two inspectors attached to the city police in Warangal.
Meanwhile, human rights organisations - AP Civil Liberties Committee and Human Rights Forum - also condemned the ways adopted by the police at the counseling camp.
A total of 183 accused attended the camp, conducted in the Karimabad watertank limits of Warangal city. Speaking on the occasion, SP Nalin Prabhat advised to the participants to change their attitude and lead a normal life.
Suspended SI Ravi Kumar and prime accused in the Kodimunja explosives blast case Dasari Hanumaiah were warned that they their names would figure in the list of rowdies if they continue to adopt underhand tactics in the city.
During the counseling, the SP said the seven absentees at the Parivarthana Sadassu would be arrested soon.
The SP said the role of parents and teachers play a vital part in moulding an individual and they would be blamed for the deviation of any individual if the youths attracted to extremism and rowdyism in the city.
He said the Warangal police were taking every possible step to curb the anti-social and anti-national elements with a stern approach.
Expressing concern over the decline in the values in the present day society, the SP said the guiding forces like teachers were lacking that commitment to mould an individual.
