Imphal: Two elderly brothers died and another was hospitalised after taking suspected pesticide, mistaking it for country liquor, at the Kakching district HQ on Friday night.
Locals said the three were enjoying drinks near their Kakching Chumnang Sambellei Pareng residence when they ran out of liquor around 8pm. Then one of them rushed home, brought a bottle and all of them started drinking from it, mistaking it for country liquor.
Its content later turned out to be suspected pesticide. Before long, all of them complained of severe pain in their abdomen.
They were rushed to a nearby private hospital where Yengkhom Ibomcha (82) and his younger brother, Yengkhom Niladaja (74), succumbed to the severe impact of the poisonous liquid, while Naorem Ibotombi (75) is undergoing treatment, the locals said.
Police have sent the bodies of the two brothers to the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East district for autopsy. They have registered a case to ascertain the veracity of the tragic incident and to ascertain the exact component of the liquid the trio gulped down.
