Haryana man swept away by currents at Sahastradhara

Khargone: A 40-year-old man from Haryana drowned in the fast-flowing water of Sahastradhara, a popular tourist and picnic spot near Maheshwar in Khargone district, police said.

The deceased, identified as Sanjay Satveer, a carpenter from Hisar district, had visited Jalkoti Sahastradhara with friends on Tuesday, said Maheshwar police station in-charge Jagdish Goyal.

“Sanjay was repeatedly diving into the water and asking his friends to record videos of his jumps. He also shot selfies and videos, telling friends that the real fun of bathing is in Sahastradhara,” he said.

Despite being warned about the strong current, he jumped again into a turbulent stream of the Narmada river and was swept away. Police said another companion was about to jump along with him but backed out at the last moment, narrowly escaping a similar fate.

A search operation was launched, but rescuers were unable to locate him on Tuesday. His body was recovered on Wednesday and sent for postmortem examination. Later in the day, the body was handed over to his family members.

Goyal said Sanjay had been working with fellow labourers in nearby Dhamnod town of Dhar district, where he was engaged in furniture-making work.

Sahastradhara, known for its rocky natural channels and strong currents, hosts national-level white-water sports canoe slalom competitions.

Authorities have repeatedly cautioned visitors against bathing in the area. Official records show that more than 50 people have lost their lives at the spot over the past decade.
