Jaipur/BIKANER: One of the three infants who sustained burn injuries in the fire at PBM Hospital in Bikaner died while undergoing treatment on Tuesday. The child had suffered burns due to intense smoke during the fire that broke out in the hospital's children nursery on Sunday.
Baby Ekta was born prematurely. PBM Hospital's child unit head Dr Renu Agrawal said that the baby was born in the seventh month of pregnancy and weighed just 1.4 kg.
"A baby should normally weigh 3 kg, so her condition was already serious. The baby was undergoing treatment for being underweight for the past 15 days. Her skin had turned black," said Dr Agrawal.
District collector Arti Dogra told TOI that an enquiry has been launched into the death. "The death occurred around 8pm. I have sent a team of doctors to the hospital to enquire further into the death," said the officer.
However, officials and the doctors shied away from saying that burns had aggravated the baby's already serious condition.
"It is a matter of investigation. A committee headed by the additional district magistrate will give its report by Thursday. If any negligence is found on part of the hospital authorities, even legal action can be taken. If the family members suspect any negligence that led to the fire, they can also lodge a complaint," said collector Dogra.
A committee constituted by the district administration on Monday found glaring negligence in the maintenance of infrastructure at the hospital. A short-circuit occurred due to faulty electricity wires. The wires were very old and had no insulators on them at most places. These wires could not carry the load which was increasing over the years in the hospital.
Amit Kakkar, XEN (Elect), PWD, who is a member of a committee constituted by district administration, visited the hospital on Tuesday and inspected the electricity wiring of the hospital. Kakkar issued instructions to the staff concerned for repairing and maintenance of wires.
