JAMSHEDPUR: Nine persons from East Singhbhum district were injured in the unfortunate train tragedy that occurred in the Balasore district of Odisha on Friday evening.
The injured are in the age group of 18-25 and were migrant labourers who were travelling to Chennai for work. Of the nine, eight have returned to their homes.
Out of the nine persons, five are residents of Chakulia town, while the rest are from Baharagora block.
The five boarded the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express from Kharagpur in West Bengal while the Baharagora residents - Sonu Polai (20), Ravi Dehuri (24), Mansa Polai (22) and Buda Nayak (25) - boarded from Balasore.
Mansa is stated to have suffered multiple injuries and admitted in a hospital in Balasore.
One of the injured, Md Shahrukh, 25, said he along with Sheikh Shahid (22), Moharam Ali (18), Meraz Ansari (25) and Arbaaz Ansari (24) was on the S2 coach of the express train when the accident occurred.
The four residents of Baharagora were in S7 that suffered less damage in the three-train pile-up.
Shahrukh said the commuters fell over each other as the coach turned turtle after the collision.
Sonu was near the door and walking towards his berth from the toilet when the incident happened.
"Some survived with injuries while several succumbed to fatal wounds at the site. The collision occurred a few minutes after the train moved from Balasore," Shahrukh said.
"As fellow passengers were screaming for help, we all (five) stepped out of the coach and sat on one of the derailed bogies till we were rescued and taken to the hospital," he recalled.
With a fracture on his right leg, Shahrukh was admitted to the Chakulia community health centre (CHC) while the rest four were discharged after first aid. They called their family members who rushed to Balasore and brought them home in the night itself.
"Mansa is admitted to a hospital in Balasore as he suffered multiple injuries. We three have fewer injuries," Sonu said. He added that they travelled by bus to Baharagora on the fateful night and received treatment at the CHC.
Meanwhile, chief minister Hemant Soren tweeted a medical team from the state would leave for Balasore by helicopter on Sunday. They would meet the injured from Jharkhand and take care of their medical requirements.
