JAMSHEDPUR: A 17-year-old youth, allegedly detained by police on October 30, was found hanging in the washroom of a police station in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, police said.
"A detailed investigation is being done to ascertain the cause of Wednesday's death and the officer in-charge of the police station, Manohar Kumar, has been suspended," SP Anand Prakash said on Thursday.
Sources said the police would probe how the minor was kept in the police station without being charged and why wasn't he produced in court.
Police said the deceased is a resident of Gohira village in Dalbhumgarh police station area in East Singhbhum and was accused of kidnapping a minor for marriage.
The couple had eloped on October 26, following which the girl's parents had lodged a missing complaint with the police. Subsequently, the family found the duo and produced them before the Seraikela police on October 30. The police let the girl go home with her parents, but kept the boy in their custody for questioning.
After hearing news of his son's death, the bereaved father claimed that his son had brought the girl home on October 27. However, the next morning, girl's father came and took the couple along with him assuring the boy's family that they would be married soon. "Thereafter there's no information about my boy," his father said.
