Lone tigress of Machia Safari Park dies due to heat stroke

Jodhpur: Jodhpur’s Machia Safari Park lost its only tigress, Ambika, on Monday due to heat stroke.A board of four veterinarians comprising Shravan Singh Rathore, Govind Singh Rajpurohit, Vitthalesh Vyas and Geeta Choudhary conducted post-mortem on Tuesday and concluded that heart of the tigress failed due to heat stroke. The exact cause, however, would be ascertained by the laboratory examination.According to ranger of the park, Balaram Bishnoi, Ambika had been resting after her meal in Monday afternoon. “She kept sleeping for unusually long hours. We tried to wake her up in the evening, but she did not move. When we checked, we found her lifeless,” said Bishnoi.Earlier, it was suspected that a venomous snake might have bitten her.One of the veterinarians said that due to excessive heat, the efficiency of lungs reduced, leading to drop in supply of oxygen and activity of the heart increased, which ultimately led to failure of the heart. “We believe that this situation has been caused by increase in atmospheric temperature and the consequent heat stroke,” said a vet.Ambika was 10 years old and had been brought to Machia Safari Park in 2016 from Kanpur along with a male tiger Anthony. The couple had since been attracting the visitors in the park. With the departure of Ambika now, Anthony has been left alone, who himself is a little above 10 years of age.The park has been developed on the rocky area on the outskirts of the city near Kaylana lake. During summer, entire rocky formation of the park has a high temperature obligating the park administration to put in adequate efforts to keep the animals cool. For this, water coolers are installed in the cages and enclosures. However, according to vets, despite these efforts to provide relief to the animals in the park, they fall short of the requirement in such a sweltering temperature.
