Docs of MDM hosp make urinary tube using mouth skin
Jodhpur: Doctors of MDM Hospital in Jodhpur have developed a new urinal tube of an adolescent patient using the skin from his mouth. The patient was suffering from rare congenital complication wherein he had a narrow urinary tube (urethra) resulting in less urine passing through the tract.
This complication had resulted in severe infection in his urinary tract.

The patient had already had two unsuccessful surgeries which had caused the infection to become more serious.
HoD (paediatric urology) RK Saran said that first the natural urinary tube was bypassed and then the infection was cured before proceeding to treat the urethral stricture. “In this condition, the position of the urinary opening in the male genitalia is not normally situated and is positioned downwards from birth. This leads to various problems in the private parts along with partial or complete obstruction in urination,” said Saran.
The doctors, after treating the infection, marked the length of the tube, which had been badly damaged due to infection, and the area, which had the interruption.
“The damaged part of the tube was incurable and it required to be removed and replaced with a fresh tube. We decided to take skin from the mouth of the patient according to the requirement and developed a fresh tube from this skin to plant it at the removed part,” Saran said.
The procedure lasted for over four hours. The patient was kept on the bypass mechanism for passing urine for a few days and later shifted to the natural system.

“The patient is now comfortable passing urine and no other complication has been observed,”,said Saran.
Doctors are monitoring the patient for any prospective infection but no sign has been noticed. According to Saran, this is a rare occurrence among children and is the first of its kind in the state to be treated.
