KANPUR: A gall bladder swollen to the size of a gourd was surgically treated through a small incision in the abdomen. The feat was achieved by a city based doctor, Man Mohan Verma.
On August 17, a gall bladder of size 25 cm was removed from Krishna Devi's abdomen which was about 40 times larger than the normal size of a gall bladder viz 10-15 cubic cm.
Dr Verma said, "Krishna Devi Shukla, a resident of Saket Nagar, was suffering from pain in the lower abdomen. Through ultrasound it was found that a lump had formed in the swollen gall bladder. The walls of the bladder had thickened along with several stone formations."
"Through CT Scan it was found that the size of the bladder had become 30-40 times larger than the normal. It was occupying the right side of the patient's abdomen from the liver to the urinary bladder," he added.
"In all small incision surgeries the surgeon's hand cannot enter the abdomen, hence vital information required for safe surgery is not available making the surgery risky. The use of ultrasound within the abdomen -- in this operation -- provided information in a more detailed manner," he said.
Another advantage is that the patient can go home within a day after the surgery.
This method for surgery has been presented by Dr Sharma at World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery's 8th conference (New York, USA), 9th conference (Cancum, Mexico), 10th conference (Berlin, Germany) and 11th conference (Yokohama, Japan). His work has also been presented in three conferences of SAGES (Society of American Gastro Intestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) and various other surgical meets.
