Kanpur: A man, along with his wife, was arrested by police on Sunday in Kanchan Nagar, Shuklaganj, Unnao, for allegedly defrauding a nursing officer at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow of Rs 59.5 lakh under the guise of marriage by posing as a judicial officer (ADJ), police stated on Monday.
He had previously also committed many frauds in a similar manner by impersonating as ADJ, IAS and IPS officer. He used to target women through matrimonial sites and advertisements in newspapers and then dupe them of several lakhs of rupees in the name of purchasing land or luxury cars. Then he used to disappear and relocate to another city to target another victim.
The accused has already been imprisoned in jail in Lucknow for cheating and raping a woman. One woman ended her life after being deceived by him.
He kept two dogs for his protection. Father of the victim, a nursing officer, residing in Lajpat Nagar, Lucknow, had placed a matrimonial advertisement. The accused Vishnu Shankar Gupta (46), claiming to be an ADJ from Sitapur, Anshuman Vikram, proposed marriage. He took the woman's contact number and informed her that his father was receiving treatment in Bengaluru and he would marry her once he recovered.
The accused persuaded her to take a loan, alleging he wanted to purchase a luxury car. On Sept 7, when the loan amount was credited to her account, she withdrew Rs 59.5 lakh and went to Charbagh, later reaching Jhakkarkati bus stand in Kanpur, where she called him. They met at Shani Dev Temple in Chunniganj and went to watch a movie. Later, he left saying that he was feeling unwell and then fled.
The woman filed a case at Colonelganj police station. Late on Saturday night, police raided a house in Kanchan Nagar, Shuklaganj, Unnao, and arrested the accused along with his wife Ayushi Gupta. During the arrest, the couple attempted to attack the officials by unleashing their pet dogs.
A native of Nawabganj in Kanpur, the accused continued living with Ayushi Gupta (33) despite their divorce. Police have recovered Rs 42.5 lakh and a car from their residence.
The nursing officer identified the accused upon arriving in the city. Interrogation revealed that the accused had defrauded several others in the past, including swindling Rs 40 lakh from a woman in Lucknow. Another woman committed suicide after falling into his trap.
DCP Central Shravan Kumar Singh stated that investigations are on to identify other victims. The DCP said that cash worth Rs 42.50 lakh, a luxury car, a fake ID card, and a Kanpur Bar Association ID card were recovered from his possession.
