BEHRAMPORE: Police on Monday arrested Usha Hazra, an ayah at Lalbag subdivision hospital, who had allegedly wiped clean a patient with some toxic chemical after delivery. Usha was rejected bail and remanded to 10 days of judicial custody after she was produced before Lalbag ACJM court on Tuesday. She will be produced before the court again on December 17.

Usha was absconding for the last one month.
Sikha Bibi, a resident of Tiktikipara, was admitted to the Lalbag hospital on October 31 and gave birth to a stillborn. During the delivery, those attending to her applied some liquid on the lower part of her body to clean her up. Soon, Sikha realized that the parts of her body where the liquid had been applied were scalded.

. Shyamali Karmakar, a nurse, was suspended by the state health department. Hospital superintendent Saswati Nag also lodged an FIR against Usha Hazra, who allegedly cleaned up Sikha Bibi.
The body of the stillborn was exhumed later to probe whether the baby died due to the toxic chemical. However, the magistrate and the chef medical officer of health claimed prima facie reports say there was no acidic reaction on the baby's body.
According to hospital authority's complaint, an attempt to murder case has been started against the ayah under IPC 304 and 326.
