Kolkata: It was an Indian story at the National Library here on Sunday, with Arjun Erigaisi and Rameshbabu
Vaishali winning the Blitz titles of Tata Steel Chess India. While Arjun ended with 12.5 points in the men’s section, Vaishali’s 13.5 among women put her beyond the reach of others.
Ukraine’s Mariya Muzychuk finished behind Vaishali, while Hikaru Nakaumura was the men’s runner-up.
Arjun got off to a poor start on Sunday, losing the 10th round to GM Abdusattarov Nodirbek. Even though the Indian had the early advantage, Nodirbek came back into the game with some good counter moves. He latched on to an Arjun fumble to wrest advantage and subsequently, the game. Arjun, however, bounced back in the next round, beating Vidit Gujrathi.
With wins over D Gukesh, Wesley So and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Arjun was well placed for the crucial game against Hikaru. Arjun won the contest to secure the title with a round to spare.
Vaishali too started the day on a losing note, going down to Anna Muzychuk. However, a draw against Mariya Muzychuk ensured that she remains in the race. Mariya’s loss in the 12th round gave Vaishali the opportunity she needed and she pounced on it, beating Savitha Shri to join the Ukrainian in the lead.
Harika Dronavalli did Vaishali a favour by beating Mariya in the 14th round. A draw for Vaishali gave her the lead. The Indian went on to hold Anna Ushenina, which was enough for the title.
