KOLKATA: A 63-year-old man from Salt Lake lost Rs 66.6 lakh after he was allegedly lured into an online investment scam by a woman he met on a dating app. The man lodged a complaint at the Bidhannagar Cybercrime Police Station on Thursday.
The victim connected with the woman on April 14 and began chatting with her over WhatsApp. Within a week, she persuaded him to invest money online, promising high returns.
She later added him to a Telegram group, where the deception intensified. Initially, the man invested Rs 20,000 and received small returns, which built his trust.
Over time, he invested his entire life savings, sold his apartment and withdrew money from multiple accounts, and invested in the supposed scheme, following the woman's advice.
"Such online investment scams are rising. We regularly urge people to stay cautious," said an officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
