SINGUR: The feeling of discontent among "unwilling farmers" in Singur came to light on Wednesday after
Mamata Banerjee skipped her programme there. It took a lot of effort from Trinamool leader Mukul Roy to keep the crowd from dispersing.
Mamata was to hand over stalls near the Singur station to 16 families. In her absence, Roy did the formalities. While farmers like Monoranjan Malik, Tushar Sit and Badal Santra were happy, many in Beraberi Purbapara, Bajemelia and Gopalnagar Ghoshpara — who are yet to receive anything — preferred to stay back home.
They said they had been part of Mamata's movement since 2007.
Whenever Mamata would be in Singur, these families would push their way to the front and cheer as Didi insisted that they refuse to accept cheques. People like Ratan Ghosh, Pratap Ghosh and Angurbala Devi did not turn up for the programme on Wednesday. Though they did not participate in any demonstration — as had been planned earlier — they were clearly unhappy at how things have unfolded so far.
"What can we say. If we go against Didi, we will lose everything. We don't know when things will improve," Pratap Ghosh said.
Local Congress leader Arun Das distanced himself from Trinamool.
