Kolkata: The city police on Monday revoked the suspension of former Kalighat OC Goutam Das. He had been removed from his post on May 2 and immediately suspended after he posted on social media a now-deleted photograph of himself in uniform aiming an INSAS assault rifle, captioned "Ready for new assignment".
"Inspector Goutam Das of South Division, Kolkata Police, who was placed under suspension on May 2, 2026, is released from suspension with effect from May 11. Decision in respect of the period spent by him under suspension will be taken at the time of disposal of departmental proceeding drawn up against him over the issue," the order signed by commissioner Ajay Nand read.
Nand indicated departmental proceedings will continue and the inspector is yet to be assigned a specific duty.
Das, a special branch inspector, became Kalighat OC on April 25, four days before the Kolkata polls. Kolkata Police is investigating, prima facie, complaints that Das violated EC guidelines, the police's internal social media policy and service rules, and also handled the firearm illegally. Kalighat PS also covers part of the Bhowanipore assembly constituency.
TOI could not independently contact Das.
