KOLKATA: After bombs and pipeguns, pen pistols. The latest addition to the armoury of trouble-makers in West Midnapore has left CID officers a worried lot.
On Thursday after CID's special operations group seized 300 round of bullets from accused Nimai Das' house ADG CID Bhupinder Singh sent a detailed report to the state DGP A B Vohra about pen pistols.
CID officers are worried that hectic political movement during the elections could make the political leaders vulnerable to attacks using these weapons, which are difficult to detect.
"I haven't got the details of the mechanism of pen pistols yet. Once we get the report and considering the security aspects, a review will be made," said A K Maliwal, director, special security unit.
On Thursday morning, CID officers recovered 300 more bullets hidden inside the cistern of the ground floor toilet of Nimai Das' house at Tarun Sengupta Upanagari in Rajarhat. "Two types of bullets were found. 120 rounds are of .315 calibre and rest are of .303 calibre,' said S N Gupta, DIG CID Operations. Probe revealed, the .303 calibre bullets are manufactured in erstwhile Czechoslovakia.
"Like these bullets, the seized bullet-proof jacket is also imported. We suspect the jacket was manufactured in Israel," said a senior CID officer. The recovery however worried the CID officers as till now they are in dark about the set of customers who engaged Mondal and Das to procure pen pistol and bullet proof jacket.
On Thursday afternoon, CID officers got important leads from Nimai's wife. They have raided different places in East and West Midnapore in search of those who received the arms. Sources said, earlier Mondal had delivered five consignments near Contai in East Midnapore. Police suspect, a few political leaders were among the customers.
Das, believed to be the kingpin of an inter-state arms smuggling racket has still evaded the police net. He disappeared on Sunday afternoon, soon after the arrest of his cronies Ashok Mondal and five others from Malda.
