Bengal information technology minister Partha Chatterjee on Saturday sought a report from IT captains and stakeholders over ways to improve the industry and showcase it to the country.

KOLKATA: Bengal information technology (IT) minister Partha Chatterjee on Saturday sought a report from IT captains and stakeholders over ways to improve the industry and showcase it to the country. Chatterjee will submit the report to chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
“We will be making a report soon suggesting what should be done for the betterment of the industry after talking to the industry players,” Descon managing director and Sector V Stakeholders’ Association president S Radhakrishnan said.

“We have discussed about the specific requirements of the IT industry here and what should be our future growth path,” Kalyan Kar, managing director, Acclaris (India) said after meeting the minister. Bikram Dasgupta, chairman, Globsyn Group, said the minister tried to address issues like changing visibility of the state IT sector, attracting more foreign investments, beautification of Sector V and technological upgrade.
“He took a solution-oriented approach.” He said Chatterjee told the industry players to shoulder the responsibility of changing the perception of the state’s IT scenario and ensured the state government’s support for that. Chatterjee met officials of the ailing West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation (Webel) as well.Webel is the nodal agency of the state government for developing IT, ITeS and electronics industries in the state.
He talked at length with the Webel management and employees to identify the problem areas. “He wants to transform Webel into a more technology-focused organization,which was our key strength. He has emphasised on technological development so that it generates more business,” Webel managing director Tamal Dasgupta said after the meeting.
