Rwik murder: Two get RI

A father-and-son duo was sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment after they were found guilty of suppressing information on the murder of five-year-old Rwik Nath in December 2005.

KOLKATA: A father-and-son duo was sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment after they were found guilty of suppressing information on the murder of five-year-old Rwik Nath in December 2005. The boy was a student of upper KG at New Alipore Convent.
Bela Bose (57), prime accused in the murder, was burnt to death by an angry mob. Though the two were not directly involved in Rwik’s murder, they were punished for suppressing information about the boy’s murder when everyone in the locality was frantically looking for him.
The third additional district judge, Alipore, Surjendra Biswas, on Tuesday handed down the sentence to Rabin Bose (60) and Kaushik Bose (35), Bela’s husband and son, respectively. Police found that Rwik was strangled to death on December 1, 2005, after he entered the home of the Boses, the neighbours of Nath. His body was then dumped into the septic tank of their house at Sadhan Hari Mukherjee Road in Behala.
Though police probed Rwik’s murder, not much was done regarding the burning of Bela apart from initiating a case against some people for murdering her. Police, in fact, are yet to file chargesheets in that case.

The probe into Rwik’s murder revealed that his grandfather, Samar, and Rabin Bose were childhood friends. Bela, a psychiatric patient, was jealous of Rwik’s father Surojit, whose Bajaj Automobile showroom on James Long Sarani was making huge profits ever since his son was born. Investigation further revealed that this envy drove her to kill Rwik, who, she thought, had brought luck to the Naths.
Bela, in fact, adored the boy since his birth. He often went to her house and spent hours together. Bela also used to cook special dishes for little Rwik. So, every one was shocked when Bela was found to have murdered Rwik, police said.
This shock gave way to anger. As soon as Rwik’s body was fished out of a septic tank in the Boses’ house in the early hours of December 2, local people dragged out Bela, Rabin and Kaushik and set them ablaze. While Bela died, her husband and son survived.
