Undertrial flees from custody
BARRACKPORE: After Digha it's Barrackpore. A day after an undertrial was snatched away from police lock up, another undertrial escaped from the Barrackpore special narcotic court premises on Thursday while he was taken to the Barrackpore sub-jail from the court lock up. The two incidents speak very low of the security in police lockups and subordinate courts.

Thirty-year-old Noor Hossain fled from the Barrackpore special court on Thursday afternoon while he was escorted by two constables pulling Hossain by the handcuff. The undertrial, accused of drug peddling, was being taken to the Barrackpore sub-jail after the court turned down his bail petition.
The incident happened at 4.45 in the afternoon.
Hossain allegedly aided by one of his relatives who come to see him in the court lock up on Thursday, pushed one of the constables holding the handcuff and took to his heels. The police in the court premises were initially taken aback but later gave a chase to catch hold of the undertrial. But he vanished from the court premises within seconds. Police later reached out to his hideouts but could not trace him.
"Such things have become a commonplace in Barrackpore court. There is no security in the court premises, and the police refuse to learn from the attacks in Delhi. We have submitted memorandum to the district administration from time to time. But there has no improvement in the situation," said lawyer Proloy Bhattacharya.
Police have ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident, a senior police officer said. Barrackpore is also trying to trace out the relative who they suspect had a hand in helping the undertrial to escape from the court premises. Hossain was arrested by Jagaddal Police on May 6 on charges of peddling drugs.
