KOLKATA: The city police on Monday arrested a precious stone and diamond dealer for allegedly hoodwinking a businessman of diamonds worth over Rs 25 lakh.

KOLKATA: The city police on Monday arrested 33-year-old Anju Jain, a precious stone and diamond dealer, for allegedly hoodwinking a businessman of diamonds worth over Rs 25 lakh.
Deputy commissioner (detective department) Soumen Mitra said that on the basis of a complaint by Lakshminarayan Toshowal, of Howrah’s Watkinson Street, police arrested Anju from her house in Posta.

Toshowal had handed over the diamonds to Anju for sale, but the lady later pretended to have been robbed of them.
She even filed a complaint at Posta police station, saying that a prospective buyer had visited her precious stone shop at Burrabazar, after she received the diamonds from Toshowal. The buyer offered her a paan and after eating it, she lost consciousness. Anju complained that by the time she came round, the diamonds were missing, As this story spread, Toshowal rushed to Burrabazar and alleged that Anju was trying to swindle him. “He lodged a complaint on June 5. But Anju turned absconder,� the DC-DD said. Later she was held from her house in Posta. During the interrogation, the police found inconsistency in her version of the missing diamonds.
Mitra said that investigation also revealed that Anju has swindled several others dealing in precious stones and diamonds.
