Kerala polls: IUML against open CM discussions
KOZHIKODE: IUML expressed strong displeasure over public discussions within Congress on the chief minister's post. In a rare public disapproval over the remarks by leaders of the leading party in UDF, IUML state general secretary PMA Salam said such open squabbles disregard the sacrifices made by lakhs of UDF activists during election campaigns amid the scorching summer heat.
"It will damage the morale of cadres. First of all, the election results must be announced and the front must get a majority before finalizing the CM candidate. UDF constituents have the freedom to conduct discussions as the front is expected to win elections, but it is improper to make those discussions public. IUML strongly believes that it is not the right thing," he said.
Salam said public disagreements could demoralize party workers and stressed that leaders should refrain from such actions. When asked if IUML would approach the Congress high command to end these public debates, Salam said raising the issue through the media itself was sufficient.
Responding to a question about someone who has not contested in assembly elections becoming the CM, Salam pointed out that there was a precedent and cited the case of C Achuta Menon. He also clarified that he was not justifying anything and maintained that such discussions were premature.
On the visit of Wandoor MLA A P Anilkumar to Panakkad, widely seen as an attempt to secure support for AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, Salam said it is normal for leaders from Malappuram and elsewhere to visit Panakkad Thangal.
He added that IUML will support Congress party's CM choice (whoever it may be) and would share an opinion if consulted. He said the final decision would come as a collective one from UDF.
When asked whether IUML was confident of securing five ministerial berths, Salam questioned why the party should be limited to that number. He said that the party would not raise the demand and that the decision would be taken after discussions.
