Kannur bar caught short-pouring, fined 25k
Kozhikode: A bar in Pazhayangadi, Kannur, has been slapped with a fine of Rs 25,000 after vigilance officials found that the ‘full pegs' it served were quietly trimmed down before reaching the glass. Vigilance officials found that instead of the standard 60ml peg measure, the Pratheeksha Bar was using a 48ml measure and that instead of the 30ml pour, the bar was serving 24ml. The discrepancy was found during the statewide vigilance inspections conducted as part of ‘Operation Bar Code'.Following the detection of the discrepancy, the vigilance team summoned legal metrology officials to the spot and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.Vigilance officials said that they had earlier received information that customers were being served reduced quantities using smaller peg measures, especially after they had consumed two or three pegs. In Iritty, Thaliparamba and Payyannur checks were also carried out by scanning the QR codes on the liquor bottles. It was found that the liquor supplied there had been allotted to other locations, and there were discrepancies in both the brand and category. However, the preliminary assessment is that this could be a QR-code related issue, and further investigation will be conducted. Inspections were carried out in four bars in the district at Iritty, Thaliparamba, Pazhayangadi and Payyannur. The operation was led by vigilance DSP Babu Peringeth in Payyannur, inspectors Sajeev in Thaliparamba, Sunil Kumar in Pazhayangadi and Vinod Chandran in Iritty.
