LUCKNOW: As the news spread that chief minister Mayawati was heading towards Kaiserbagh police station for a surprise inspection, the men in uniform swung into action to `spruce up' the Kotwali premises.
The instant makeover saw an instant coat of fresh paint and the premised getting a spic and span look. Even flowers were sprinkled into the non-functional fountain.
Mayawati reached the Kaiserbagh police station at 7pm on Sunday and straight away went to the police station office.

Much to the relief of the cops, the CM did not order action against anyone during her 20-minute stay.
She enquired when the police station was established and was promptly told by a cop `Sir, in 1939'. Next, the CM went to the inspector's room, where she along with principal secretary home Kunwar Fateh Bahadur and cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar asked for the crime register. DIG DK Thakur, UPPCL chairman Navneet Sehgal and DM Anil Sagar too were present.
Kunwar Fateh Bahadur directed circle officer Bali Ram Saroj and inspector Raj Kumar Shukla to show all records of 2010 and 2011. While examining the status of cases, the CM directed Shukla to pull up his socks and fill complete entry in the register which could clearly tell the status of the case.
Going through the crime register, the CM came across vehicle theft cases, which stood at 48 in 2010. Out of these, 10 cases had been solved, said the DIG and CO. Unhappy over the number of vehicle thefts, she said it sends out a wrong message to people. Why only 10 cases had been worked out, she asked. Giving some lessons to cops on checking such cases, Mayawati said since it is known that vehicle theft is generally done by gangs, the miscreants caught in the 10 cases should be asked about the gang leaders behind vehicle-lifting. She even directed the DIG to look into these cases and also check the crime status in other police stations in the city.

Similarly, while going through SC/ST cases, principal secretary Home pointed towards an old case and said: "This is the first police station where a case under 376 IPC has so been pending for so long."
Mayawati then asked about the reason for delay from officials. CO Saroj told the CM that a DNA test report was awaited in the case. "As you know sir, DNA samples are sent to Hyderabad and the report in this regard is still awaited," Saroj told the chief minister.
"Then you should write this that the DNA sample had been sent to Hyderabad," the CM directed the cop.
She then enquired asked women harassment cases and was told that though 11 cases were registered in 2010, not a single case has so far been registered this year.
The CM then directed the cops to maintain the register crime category wise and left the police station at around 7.20pm.
Heavy police bandobast was made inside and outside Kaiserbagh Kotwali with roads wearing a deserted look, a few minutes before the CM's cavalcade arrived.
