Police recovered 10 mobile sets, two gold chains, a gold necklace, two ATM cards and a bag containing clothes. Surendra Pal is a close aide of dreaded criminal Avinash Tripathi who is absconding and has taken shelter in Nepal. Police had announced Rs 50,000 as award in the name of Tripathi.
The arrest came during the probe of a case in which Abhishek Singhal of Faizabad had lodged a case alleging that unidentified car- borne miscreants had looted cash from him around 9pm on Friday.
Singhal had told police that he was to travel for Faizabad and was looking for some transport vehicle when a car stopped near him. The man on the driver's seat asked Singh where he was headed and offered to take him there in his car. When Singhal hesitated, two persons on the rear seat of the car came down and dragged him inside. The miscreants drove the car towards the highway (Shaheed Path) where they looted cash and then dumped him. "The gang was active on the highway in Lucknow, though the members did not target families," ASP Trans Gomti Jaiprakash said, adding that a police team led by ASP Crime worked on the case and nabbed the miscreants. "To crack the case, police took help of the CCTV footage and informers," he said.
Surendra admitted he had visited Nepal to "seek blessings" of his mentor. He further disclosed that he used to extort cash from traders, contractors, doctors and engineers at the behest of his mentor Avinash Tripathi. He disclosed to the police that he was out of 'job' these days and so chose to target innocent passengers and along with other gang members used to go around chain snatching.
ASP (North) Vijay Dhull told media that miscreants had owned up two kidnapping and four loot cases in the Gomtinagar. He said the miscreants had targeted a Dr Onkar Singh of Faizabad who used to visit Lucknow for some his business related work. Ghazipur police had then doubted the credential of the loot case in which a doctor was targeted. It also surfaced that the miscreants had looted a laptop from Surya Pratap a Gosaiganj resident on September 9 .
