Gen Z learning skill-based courses to meet real world demands
Lucknow: Gen Z is combining traditional degrees with parallel online skill-based courses to enhance career prospects.
Moving beyond single-discipline programs, students are opting for innovative combinations such as history with data analytics, political science with public policy and English literature with digital content creation.
At the same time, they are actively enrolling in online courses alongside their university studies, using platforms like Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning and many online courses to gain industry-relevant skills in areas like artificial intelligence, digital marketing, coding and data science.
Science and commerce students are also embracing modern blends such as physics with renewable energy, mathematics with AI and machine learning and commerce with e-commerce and supply chain management. Creative and professional fields are evolving with combinations like media studies with animation and VFX, psychology with neuroscience and law with cyber law.
“This combination of university education and online learning is helping us become industry-ready from day one,” said, a result awaited candidate, Vyom Kunwar Singh.
With history and data analytics, students are now able to explore career opportunities in policy research, archival analytics, and data-driven roles in museums and archives—fields that previously had limited integration with technology, stated, another candidate Ayush Mishra.
An upcoming undergraduate, Devansh Rastogi, pointed out that skill-based learning aligned with real-world demands, and is more valuable than traditional degrees alone, as combinations like political science with public policy are creating pathways in governance, think tanks and civil services preparation.
Mathematics combined with AI and machine learning is opening doors to technology-driven careers such as data analysis, AI development and fintech, enabling students to become job-ready even before completing their degrees. In creative domains, combinations like English literature with digital content creation and media studies with animation are helping students build careers in content writing, digital marketing, film production and social media strategy, stated, educationist RB Mathur.
He noted that this dual approach—formal education paired with flexible online learning is shaping a more skilled, adaptable and globally competitive generation in the city, where students are not only gaining degrees but also building diverse career pathways across industries.
