Newlywed woman found dead at in-laws’ house, family alleges dowry harassment
Lucknow: A 29-year-old newlywed woman was found dead in Thakurganj area on Monday, police said on Tuesday, detaining two in the matter for questioning.
The deceased was found hanging inside her in-laws’ home in Kashi Vihar under the Thakurganj police station limits. Her family has alleged that she was being harassed for dowry and accused her in-laws of murder.
“The woman’s husband, 35, and father-in-law were detained for questioning following an FIR being registered under sections of dowry death and harassment after an application was given by the woman’s father,” said DCP west Kamlesh Dixit. “The complainant said the couple got married on Nov 22, 2025, and after that the in-laws allegedly started taunting her over less dowry and were even pressuring her for a four-wheeler,” the DCP added. “The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and action will be taken based on facts,” said Dixit.
The woman’s brother said their mother is admitted to a private hospital. His sister had visited the hospital on Saturday night to see her mother before returning to her in-laws’ house.
The family said they received a phone call from the in-laws home around 11 am on Sunday informing them that Shweta had died by suicide. By the time relatives reached the house, the body had already been brought down and shifted to the trauma centre, they alleged.
