LUCKNOW:Barely 20 days after their release on bail, senior lawyer and Rihai Manch president Mohammed Shoaib and poet-activist Deepak Kabir, were booked again on Friday by Thakurganj police for participating in

anti-CAA protest.

Thakurganj police lodged an FIR against 14 named persons, including Shoaib and Kabir, and 100 unidentified people for taking out a candlelight march in violation of prohibitory orders on January 30.

Police arrested seven named accused from Clock Tower in Hussainabad early Friday. They were identified as Mohammed Tahir, Jugnu Qureshi, Mohammed Shaan Khan, Rehbar, Dawood, Shavez and Tufail.

All accused were charged with rioting, danger and obstruction to public passage, assault on a public servant to deter him from discharge of duty and entering a prohibited area.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (west zone) Vikas Chandra Tripathi said, “The arrested persons were trying to vitiate the atmosphere where women were protesting peacefully. On January 30, the named persons reached Clock Tower and distributed candles while instigating protestors against CAA and proposed NRC.”

The officer said despite several reminders about prohibitory orders, the protestors continued to stage sit-in.

So far, Lucknow police has registered eight FIRs since the beginning of anti-CAA protests from January 18 in which around 1,000 people have been booked.

Rubbishing claims of the police, Mohammed Shoaib said protestors only paid obeisance to Mahatma Gandhi by lighting a candle.

“Nobody took out a march or held protest. We rather observed silence. Cops are trying to divert the issue and create fear among women protestors by lodging FIR,” he said.

Mohammed Shoaib and Deepak Kabir were arrested in December for their alleged role in violence during anti-CAA protests.
