Theft of ashtadhatu idols leads to tension

VARANASI: Tension prevailed at Badagaon area following the theft of idols of Ram and Janki from the Ramjanaki temple on Thursday. In protest against the incident, the local traders downed their shutters and blocked the road.

according to reports, some maruti van-borne miscreants raided the 200-year-old temple and after holding the mahant arun das and a seer, who were sleeping there, at the gun-point, they decamped with the ashtadhatu idols of ram, lakshman, janki and gopalji. the seers immediately informed the matter to the pradhan of the area and other persons. the news of the loot spread like a wildfire at badagaon and adjoining areas and the locals started assembling near the temple in night. the police reached there at about 3 am. sensing the gravity of the situation, the ssp and other senior police officials also reached there. later, on the assurance of the police the local residents agreed to clear the road. the police have recovered a silver umbrella, which was fixed on the top of idols and a shoe from a street near the temple. the police suspect the hand of seers in the incident.
