LUDHIANA: Consuming just 5 grams of 'fenugreek seeds' (Methi) daily help in reducing the blood sugar level, reveals an experiment conducted by the dietary department of a local hospital. This study comes as a good new to the large number of diabetic population in the country as after obesity diabetes is the disease that poses a major problem for the generation next residing in Metros.
Ruma Singh, chief dietician CMCH said based on the myth that consuming fenugreek seeds help reducing blood sugar level, the department carried out an experiment on trial basis.

Thirty people above the age of 30 whose blood sugar level were above normal were given fenugreek seeds for a week and the results were encouraging.
Chief dietician Ruma Singh said fenugreek seeds contain a fibre called 'mucilaginous' which helps in lowering blood sugar. She said generally people have misconceptions that consuming fenugreek leaves in vegetable form too would lower their sugar level, however, this is not the case, fenugreek seeds taken orally or after soaking them overnight proves effective for diabetic patients.
Paramjeet Kaur, a city resident, who is diabetic said she has been consuming fenugreek seeds for the last six months and consequently her blood sugar level had come down from 200 to 120 ml/dl. She added the seed is a blessing in disguise for diabetic patients.
Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in the urban areas, as well as the rural areas. About 12% of the population is suffering from diabetes and what is more alarming is that even kids are falling prey to the disease, said Dr Parminder Singh, endocrinologist at DMCH. He said now even a year old child is seen suffering from this disease.
On being asked about the use of fenugreek seeds, Dr Singh said bitter gourd and fenugreek seeds would not help much in case a person is suffering from prolonged years, he need to continue medicines along with such kind of seeds.
Ruma Singh said its easy availability in the market would help the patients as only 5 grams of consumption could help reduce blood sugar level. Her advise to diabetic patients is to take fenugreek seeds orally in powdered form, stuffed in roti or swallowing it after soaking it in water overnight.
