Advocate makes mention before HC to initiate proceedings in Nanguneri killings
Madurai: An advocate made a mention before Madras high court on Friday, seeking suo motu proceedings over the recent incident in which a gang killed two people and injured five others during an attack with sickles in Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.A division bench of Justice N Sathish Kumar and Justice M Jothiraman directed the state to get instructions in this regard.

On the night of March 2, a gang launched an unprovoked attack using sickles on people who were standing outside a tea shop at Perumpathu village. In this incident, Trinath Kata, a guest worker from Odisha, and John, a differently abled man belonging to the Scheduled Caste, died, and five others were injured. The Nanguneri police registered a case and arrested seven people the next day.In a letter to the registrar judicial of the Madurai bench, advocate Aayiram K Selvakumar stated that as of date, the govt has not given any financial assistance or relief to the family of the deceased guest worker. Considering their plight, the issue may be initiated as a suo motu public interest litigation by the court to grant necessary relief to the bereaved family of the man, who was murdered for no reason, it said.
