MADURAI: Delhi-based fourth-seeded player Sumit Nagal lifted the TVS- ITF Futures trophy in the city after defeating
Vishnu Vardhan, a second-seeded player, in a two-hour long match at Union Club on Saturday. Nagal defeated Vishnu in straight sets of 7 – 6, 7 – 6 to win the title.
The 10,000 US dollar tennis tournament was held from September 21to 26 after two days of qualifying rounds on September 19 and 20.
Men’s singles, the final match of the tournament was held on Saturday morning. Nagal defeated the top seeder N Vijay Sundar Prashanth in the semi-finals, while Vishnu Vardhan defeated Sasi Kumar, a fifth seeder and qualified to the finals.
Speaking about the match, Nagal said, “It was tough match and I have to maintain my mental toughness throughout the match since heat was my another major enemy.” He said Vishnu Vardhan was a tough opponent.
Sumit Nagal has also won the doubles match after pairing with Vijay Sundar Prashanth on Friday. The duo defeated Anirudh Chandrasekar and P Vignesh with 6 – 3, 7 – 5 sets.
“The men’s singles was a tough fight as both sets turned out to be tiebreakers. Sumit Nagal won both singles and doubles in the tournament and proved to be a resourceful player,” R Subramanian, secretary of Madurai tennis foundation said. Station director of All India Radio, M Ashoke gave the trophies in the presence of R Haresh, Managing director of TVS group.
The international tournament attracted a lot of tennis talent across the country. Two players- one from Philippines and another from Turkmenistan participated in the tournament this year. “The tournament is turning out to be a successful event every year,” Subramanian added.
