MADURAI: It was a delightful experience for destitute people living in the corporation home, since they attended 'Sumangali Homam' for couples aged above 60 years on Friday morning.
The Homam was conducted at Thangasami Karupai Kalyana Mandapam and was done in order to achieve prosperity in their lives.
For the 20 destitute people from the Madurai Corporation's home for homeless urban Poor in Sellur, the event was of greater significance as they attended it with their inmates.

Deprived of a proper family life, they were extremely happy after seeing the elderly couples, who took part in the function.
71-year-old Shaktivel, who was present in the function, was gleaming in happiness. He lives in the home for the past five years after his wife and children died from chronic illness. "I didn't give a thought when I was invited for the event. But, I should indeed be lucky to witness elderly couples showered with customs as newlywed ones," he said.
K Ramasamy, 76, blessed the couples for longer lives. Drowned in debts for many years, he joined the corporation's home after he quarreled with his two wives over money-related issues. "I have no regrets in life. It is believed that one will be blessed with a child when they attend Sumangali Homam. Although I don't have children, I am here to bless the elderly couples," Ramasamy said.
Usually, Sumangali Homam is conducted for elderly couple to bless them with happiness for the rest of their lives. It is believed that whoever attends the event will be blessed with prosperity in their life.
G.K Sundarshan, the priest, who performed the homan said, "The people from such homes do not get an opportunity to attend events like this. The function is believed to be auspicious. I want them to be happy and cheerful; hence I invited destitute people from the home."
