HC orders removal of encroachments from water channel

Madurai: Madras high court has directed Madurai corporation authorities to remove encroachments from Chintamani water channel in Madurai city.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Salai Sivakumar seeking a direction to the authorities to remove the encroachments made by an individual in Chintamani water channel near Arapalayam bus stand in Madurai city.

The petitioner stated that encroachment has been committed in the form of an iron shed. It is seen that similar encroachment was earlier made by the private individual and the same was also removed in July 2025.

A division bench of justice G R Swaminathan and justice B Pugalendhi observed that taking advantage of the engagement of the officials in the electoral process, encroachment has once again been committed. The photographs enclosed in the typed set of papers bear this out. This kind of brazen defiance of rule of law cannot be permitted.

Hence, the judges directed the corporation to remove the encroachments from the channel. Police shall provide protection to enable the corporation authorities to remove the encroachments.
