Madurai: A 20-year-old college student who sustained severe head injuries in a road accident near Karaikudi, Sivaganga, was declared brain-dead on Feb 14 at govt Rajaji Hospital. Following consent from her parents, organs were harvested at the trauma care centre on Monday.
The student was initially treated at a private hospital and later referred to Govt Rajaji Hospital (GRH), where she was brought in an unconscious condition. Despite intensive treatment by the neurosurgery and ICU teams, she was declared brain-dead, and her organs harvested. The liver was sent to Meenakshi Mission Hospital, one kidney to Dr M Sundaram Hospital Pvt Ltd, and the other kidney was retained at GRH. The noble act benefited three patients.

After the procedure, the body was handed over to the relatives through the police department. The administration of GRH and Madurai Medical College paid homage to the departed soul. Later, the body was handed over to the Sivaganga district administration, which accorded state honours to the deceased.
