Madurai: A 26-year-old woman from the Perumalpuram Sri Lankan refugee camp in Kanyakumari district, who had been battling for life after setting herself ablaze on June 7, died at the government medical college and hospital at Asaripallam on Wednesday. Anusha had resorted to the extreme step after being unable to bear the murder of her lover by her brother and his accomplices.
Her lover Rasee, 34, was a resident of the refugee camp at Samugarangapuram village near Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district.
A divorcee, he had a photography studio at Valliyoor where Anusha’s brother Kaydheeswaran, 25, was an assistant. The police said that though the girl’s family opposed the love affair, the duo was hell-bent on getting married. This infuriated Kaydheeswaran who thought of getting rid of Rasee. Early on June 6, the burnt body of Rasee was found in a crematorium at Kariyamanickapuram village near Kanyakumari. Kottar police who investigated the case found injuries on his neck and sent the body to the government hospital for autopsy.
There was some difficulty in identifying the man as the body was fully burnt. Based on a tip about Rasee having gone missing from the refugee camp for two days, the police started probing in that direction and nabbed Kaydheeswaran the same day. He confessed to murdering the man by taking him in a taxi, getting him drunk and stabbing him with a broken liquor bottle.
He committed the crime with the help of his accomplices Palani alias Kannan, 25, of Suchindram and Faizal, 26, of Paramarthilingapuram, who were also arrested by the police. The trio was booked under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code.
