Mangaluru: The Radio Park Samrakshana Vedike has urged the authorities to reopen the Radio Park, which was closed around 10 years ago, at Urwa Store in the city. Vedike convener Uday Achar said the 80-year-old radio park was a much-needed entertainment and informative centre for all residents near the hill where the park was located. He also demanded the redevelopment of the park housing radio pavilion to provide a better lung space not just for residents but for birds too.
Radio Park, also known as Radio Hill and was established about 80 years ago, was beneficial for both senior citizens and children in the area. "A couple of buildings, including the Ambedkar Bhavan, have been constructed around this place, shrinking Radio Park area. The absence of a well-equipped park is causing inconvenience to the senior citizens who used to frequent the area. There are around 60 cents in the area for the radio park," he said on Tuesday.
There are about 1,000 houses in the park vicinity and if a new park is constructed, it will benefit all the residents, he stated.
Local residents Merlin Martis, KA Rohini, Suresh Kamath, Anand Baptist, Vivek Shettar and Praveen said they used Radio Park for many years.
