MANGALURU : A youth was on Friday night manhandled by members of saffron organizations, which suspected that he and his family had converted to Islam. However, no complaint was registered as the matter was settled amicably.
Satish Acharya, 24, from the village of Mandekolu in Sullia, fled in his vehicle to avoid Hindu activists when he heard some local politicians were on their way to visit his house, to convince him about Ghar Wapsi.
But they spotted him and gave chase, and intercepted Satish near Murur bridge. Later, some of them manhandled him, and he was hospitalized at KVG Hospital in Sullia.
A dditional SP CB Vedamurthy said none of them came forward to file a case. Incidentally, Satish belongs to the village of Union minister DV Sadananda Gowda.
In the last week of August, representatives of various social organizations, religious institutions and political parties had held a protest in Mandekolu, seeking action against those who had influenced Satish to embrace Islam. They said a certificate had been issued by Therbiyathul Islam Sabha of Calicut in
Kerala on April 15, 2015, stating that Satish had changed his name to Muhammed Mustakim, following his four-month stay at the Sabha.
On Monday, pro-Hindu and other organizations held a mega protest to condemn his forced conversion to Islam. A police posse was deployed at the spot. tnn
