MEERUT: District magistrate B

Chandrakala

had a special Christmas treat planned for 400 school girls from government schools across the district. The DM on Sunday took the group of girls on an outing to Meerut’s

Freedom Struggle Museum

, which commemorates the first war of independence in 1857 in addition to other landmark events in India’s freedom struggle. The outing was then followed by a special screening of Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Dangal’, based on the lives of sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat who went on to win gold medals for India at the

Commonwealth Games

.

“It is important for children to see and understand the history of their city. Meerut had a great contribution to the freedom struggle and I wanted the children to be well aware of their history. In 1857, Meerut’s warriors lay down their lives so that the spark of independence could be lit. We took students of

to the city’s Freedom Struggle Museum in the hope that it would inspire them to study hard and contribute to the nation’s growth,” Meerut DM B Chandrakala said.

The visit to the museum was followed by an afternoon of musical games, after which the students were taken to a special screening of ‘Dangal’. The DM also told students to carry the ‘Swachcha Bharat’ message to their parents when they go home. “Students and the youth are agents of change. You will all go home for the winter vacations and when you do, you must pass on the message to your parents as well. You must tell your parents to never engage in open defecation and work towards building toilets in your homes,” said the district magistrate, among a group of smiling young faces.
