Meerut marks 1857 uprising anniv with military display

Meerut: Meerut, regarded as the epicentre of the 1857 uprising, commemorated the 169th anniversary of India’s First War of Independence with a programme featuring military displays, patriotic performances and interactive sessions at the historic Race Course on Friday.

The event also marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, highlighting the continuity of sacrifice and valour from the 1857 revolt to present-day military operations.

Around 300 students, NCC cadets, serving soldiers, and Army officers participated in the programme, with a total attendance of over 500. Organisers said the event aimed to familiarise the younger generation with the legacy of the freedom struggle and the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.

Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Yogendra Singh Yadav, PVC, shared his experiences from Operation Vijay, while historian Amit Pathak spoke on Meerut’s role in the 1857 uprising and the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. Army officers also briefed attendees on Operation Sindoor and the preparedness of the armed forces.

A pipe band performance and a combat evacuation drill were among the highlights of the event, which concluded with an interaction session and group photographs with students.
