MEERUT: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered formation of a committee to look into the allegation of a petition that a sugar mill in

Muzaffarnagar

district was releasing untreated effluent leading to contamination of

groundwater in the area.

“Let a joint committee comprising the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB),

State Pollution Control Board

(PCB) and district magistrate of Muzaffarnagar furnish a factual and action taken report in the matter, following due process of law, within two months,” said a bench led be NGT chairperson justice

Adarsh Kumar Goel.

It has been alleged that due to the mill in Khatauli, Muzaffarnagar, groundwater in the area of about one-and-a-half kilometer and up to 50 meter depth is being contaminated.

The petitioner in the case, Shekhar Chauhan, has said, “The inhabitants are not able to access potable water. A team visited the area but, on account of collusion with the mill, did not give an accurate report. The applicant also approached the authorities but no action has been taken.” The next hearing has been fixed for July 7.
