MUMBAI: The state government plans to incorporate yoga in the school syllabus. Education minister
Vinod Tawde made the announcement at a yoga workshop at Dixit School in Vile Parle.
Tawde also performed ‘asanas’ with students and local BJP legislator Parag Alavni and civic officials.
“Yoga can be taught in the physical education period and it would be more effective if it is taught since childhood.
Yoga will help students to concentrate on their studies. We are talking to experts and will decide soon,” said Tawde.
Educational institutes marked International Yoga Day in different ways.
At Hansraj Morarji Public School in Andheri, the authorities will be continuing the celebrations for three days in a row to ensure that each and every student is made aware about the benefits of yoga. On Sunday, they held indoor sessions only for students from the residential school, said principal Anjana Prakash.
At Jamnabai Narsee School, 30 senior students turned up for the yoga day celebrations on Sunday morning, said principal Zeenat Bhojabhoy.
At Thakur Vidya Mandir, the turnout was good. Students said that exercise drills are tiring but yoga reduces stresses. Students from the school enjoyed the sessions and educators also participated in the session on Sunday. At Lodha school in Thane, the yoga sessions was followed by a flash mob performance and a mini-marathon. Some of the schools have been planning for the day since the school reopened for this academic session.
Governor C Vidyasagar Rao has held an event to mark the yoga day at Raj Bhavan. The event was organized by Brahmakumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya at the gubernatorial residence.
At HR College, some visiting American students also participated in the yoga workshop organized by the authorities. Students of IIT-Bombay and VES Institute of Technology conducted sessions on their campuses.
