MUMBAI: A 32-year-old police constable risked his life and caught a laptop thief who was trying to escape through the bamboo scaffolding of a four-storey heritage building on Dr DN Road in Fort on Monday.
The incident occurred around 5.30am when constable Kiran Gaikwad, attached to the Azad Maidan police, was on patrolling duty. When Gaikwad saw Vikas Das (22) sneaking out of a window of Thomas Cook’s first floor office, he gave him a chase and eventually caught him.

Das is wanted in three cases of house-breaking and stealing laptops from the same office in less than a month. “The drama lasted an hour before Das was caught. We seized the two laptops Das had stolen. The constable risked his life by climbing the bamboo ladders,” said senior inspector Narendra Singh.
Gaikwad said, “At that time, I didn’t think about my life. I followed him without any fear.”
