Kin of brain-dead man donate liver and kidneys; 38th donation this yr

MUMBAI: The city witnessed its 38th deceased organ donation this year when the family of a 66-year-old brain-dead man donated his kidneys and liver. Last year, the city had witnessed 47 such donations.

The latest donation took place at Mulund's Fortis Hospital on Monday, its seventh donation this year. While one of the kidneys and liver were transplanted into patients registered at Fortis itself, the other kidney was given to a patient at KEM Hospital, Parel. Meanwhile, Zonal Transplantation Coordination Centre (ZTCC) officials said there is a 31% increase in cadaveric organs donated this year as compared to last year.

There were 30 cadaveric donors resulting in 81 organs being donated between January 1 and September 30, 2022. In the same period this year, there have been 35 cadaveric donors resulting in 106 organ donations. "This marks a 30% increase in organ donations this year in comparison to the previous year,'' said a ZTCC official. The number of organs donated by every donor on an average has increased from 2.7 to three this year.
