Member of Dawood gang convicted for murder, dacoity

MUMBAI: A member of Dawood Ibrahim''s criminal gang, Shahajed Hussain Rahmat Hussain alias Kaloo Kanpurai, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a session court on the charge of looting a jewellery shop at Byculla in central Mumbai and murdering the jeweller.
Session judge V L Achhaliya also found Kaloo Kanpurai guilty of receiving stolen property (Sec 449 IPC) and on Sunday sentenced him to five years'' rigorous imprisionment on this count.Both sentences would run concurrently.
Two other accused, Rambhawan Shriram Gulam Warma alias Soni alias Gupta and Mohammed Yusuf Haider Ali Shah were, however, acquitted as evidence could not be established against them. One accused, Ajit Saidulla Shaikh, died during the trial.
The accused in this case who are absconding are Babu Shetty, Gopal Shetty, Ahmed Salam Latafat Khan, Aspak Khan, Aziz and Maksood Mehboob Khan. They would be tried seperately as and when they are caught.
According to prosecution, all these gangsters, armed with pistols, barged into the jeweller''s shop and looted Rs 45,000 and gold chain. They fired at the jeweller Jayantilal Shah and his son Ajit at point blank range and fled away.
The father and son chased the dacoits and Ajit managed to nab Shahajed who had shot at him. He was overpowered by the people and taken to police station. Ajit succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
