How goats, a viral pig video and protests pushed Mira Road into tension before Bakrid

A housing society dispute in Mira Road escalated into a major flashpoint after objections were raised over goats being kept inside a residential complex ahead of Bakrid. The situation intensified further after a viral video showed a policeman running with a pig near the protest site, triggering outrage, political reactions and heavy police deployment in the area.

What sparked the controversy

The row began at Poonam Cluster in Mira Road after around 40–50 goats were reportedly brought into the housing society premises ahead of Eid celebrations. Several residents objected to animals being housed inside a residential complex and argued that ritual sacrifice should only happen at officially designated locations approved by civic authorities.

Heated arguments quickly turned into a law-and-order issue

By Monday evening, videos showing heated arguments between members of both communities had flooded social media platforms. Residents from both sides remained firm in their positions as tempers rose inside the society premises. Officials later confirmed that at least one person was injured during the altercation.

The viral pig video intensified tensions further

On Tuesday, tensions escalated dramatically after a video showing a policeman running away with a pig went viral online. The animal was allegedly being brought near the protest site as a symbolic act during demonstrations outside the society. The visuals quickly spread across social media, drawing strong reactions and further inflaming the already tense atmosphere.

Authorities stepped in and removed the goats

In an attempt to defuse the situation, the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation removed around 40–50 goats from the society premises on Tuesday afternoon. The animals were shifted using multiple pickup trucks to a designated location identified by civic authorities for Bakrid-related activities.

Heavy police deployment followed across Mira Road

Police personnel from the Mira-Bhayander-Vasai-Virar commissionerate were deployed heavily around the society and nearby roads to prevent any escalation. Barricades, patrols and crowd-control arrangements were intensified as authorities worked to avoid further confrontation between groups gathered in the area.

The local dispute quickly turned into a wider political and religious controversy

Later in the day, groups gathered outside the society and recited the Hanuman Chalisa as part of the protest. BJP leaders, including former MP Kirit Somaiya and local MLA Narendra Mehta, visited the area and demanded stricter enforcement of rules regarding animal sacrifice inside residential complexes. Political leaders also linked the tension to broader concerns about law and order in Mira Road.

Authorities now face the challenge of restoring calm before Bakrid celebrations

What began as a disagreement inside a housing society over goats quickly spiralled into a sensitive communal and political issue involving protests, viral videos and security concerns. With Bakrid approaching, authorities are now focused on preventing misinformation, maintaining peace and ensuring celebrations take place without further confrontation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
