Mumbai: Degree college cut-offs drop by 2-4% in 2nd list
MUMBAI: The second merit list brought little respite for degree college aspirants as cut off in most colleges dropped marginally, at most by 2%-4%. In a few popular colleges, in demand courses saw scores fall by a mere few points. In such institutes, CBSE and ISC board candidates continued to hog the merit list.
Whether there will be a third list or not is not a certainty as colleges said they would wait to see how many students turn up to eventuality take admissions. Some students from other states, principals fear, may have left to join colleges in other states as admissions were stayed in Maharashtra. Students’ documents will be verified for the next two days and the third list would be released on Wednesday.
But principals from across the city advised students secure admissions in colleges where
they have been allotted a slot and then move up if the entry scores in the college of their choice fall. “Whether there will be a third list or not is difficult to predict. It will depend on the number of students who actually turn up to take admissions. Cut-offs are falling by just a few points because there are so many students with over 90% scores,” said Ashok Wadia,
“There are way too many students with the same score. As you go down the merit list, you see that there so many students with the exact same scores,” said principal Parag Thakkar. “One also notices that barring a few courses where the cut-off has dropped to the 80s, there are not many students from the state boards,” he added.
At KC College, CBSE and ISC dominated the 2nd merit list too. “The state boards too are always present, but not as much as CBSE or ICSE. As for a 3rd merit list, we cannot tell yet because very little time has passed and the students still have three more days left to decide" said principal Hemlata Bagla of KC College.
Most premier city colleges saw cut-offs falling by a percent or two depending on the applications, the number of 90 percenters from various boards and the seats available. Vanilla BSc is probably the
only course where admission opens at high scores but cut-offs fall dramatically __ sometimes by even 20% __ as medical and engineering aspirants pull out to join professional streams.
Colleges like Ruia which saw BA scores fall from 85.08% to 79% saw many more state board students get into the merit list. “We have a good number of HSC students as compared to those from CBSE and ISC. There are about 100-plus students in our second list,” said principal Sucheta Ketkar.
