Ritu Tawde elected Mumbai Mayor 2026 as BJP returns to BMC after 44 years; Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Ghadi appointed deputy

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde are expected to attend the Mumbai mayoral election proceedings at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters today, as the city prepares to formally elect its new civic leadership.

The Mumbai mayoral election will be held at the BMC headquarters at 12 noon today, though it is largely a formality as opposition parties have not fielded any candidates, clearing the way for BJP’s Ritu Tawde to become mayor and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Ghadi to take charge as deputy mayor. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde are expected to attend the proceedings at the civic headquarters.

The Mahayuti alliance finalised its leadership for the BMC with BJP’s Ritu Tawde assuming the mayor’s post today, while Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Ghadi will serve as deputy mayor under a rotational arrangement, signalling coordinated governance between alliance partners.

With Ritu Tawde set to take charge as mayor today, the BJP brings an end to Shiv Sena’s 25-year dominance over the BMC mayoral office, reflecting the strengthened position of the Mahayuti alliance in India’s richest municipal corporation.

The mayoral election in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will see Ritu Tawde take charge today after opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena (UBT), chose not to field a candidate, paving the way for a smooth transition under the ruling Mahayuti alliance.

BJP corporator Ritu Tawde is set to formally assume office as Mumbai’s mayor on February 11 after being elected unopposed in the BMC mayoral polls, marking the party’s first mayor in the city since 1982–83 and ending Shiv Sena’s uninterrupted 25-year hold on the post.
